..."Well, two years ago, I decided, after I'd just begun to write
songs, that I ought to get out and sing them. I didn't feel like singing alone, so I
looked for musicians in my house and going out to hear people. Tom Jans was living near my
sister [Joan Baez] at that time and she told me about him. She said he was a good guitar
player and wrote songs and we met and right away it was easy to play and sing together so
we decided to try and make a go of it. We were playing for maybe a week, just trying it
out, and I started calling local clubs in San Francisco and told them I wanted to start
singing again and they were very receptive and so we started from the bottom and grew from
there. The music on our Take Heart album is mostly personal politics that deals with
people and their emotions. If it's a sad emotion, there's usually a chorus included that
says the sadness can be changed and the situation can get better."
