Tom Jans mania
Sounds
11th June 1977
Last week in a rave review of Tom Jans' new album , Pete
Makowski wondered idly about Mr Jans' past. Neither he nor the usually knowable Elly at
CBS knew anything. But now we (or rather Pete Silverton) can reveal all - or at least a
tiny bit of it. Jans started out his career in the mid-sixties with Mimi Farina, younger
sister of Joan Baez. After the tragic death in a motorbike accident of her talented
husband, Richard, singer and author of "Been Down So Long It Looks Like Up", she
teamed up with Jans in a singing partnership. They only stayed together for 18 months or
so, recording an album for A&M before going their separate ways. After that the story
of Jans disappears into the mist yet again.
